Moose was horror icon Lon Chaney Jr’s faithful canine companion. The pair were inseparable, with Moose allegedly able to recognize Chaney no matter what makeup a role called for. Moose was tragically run over by a studio car during the filming of 1944’s Cobra Woman. Moose achieved screen immortality, appearing as the Wolf that bit Chaney as Larry Talbot and cursed him to forever fear what he’d become by the light of the full moon as The Wolf Man.

La Bête du Gévaudan

This seems to be a German illustration depicting La Bête’s various assaults on the French peasants (note to the left, a hunting party attacking the Beast who is eating a corpse, to the right the Beast is about to attack a man, while another illustration depicts the animal crossing a river in search of people to eat, etc.). Not sure of the date.

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. Ella Harper was born in Hendersonville, Tennessee in 1873. Born with an extremely rare defect (a severe case of congenital genu recurvatum) that caused her knees to bend backwards, she could only comfortably walk on all fours. She became known to sideshow crowds as The Camel Girl. Ella was the star attraction of W.H. Harris’ Nickel Plate Circus. It’s reported that at the height of her popularity she commanded a salary of $200 a week, the average Amercian laborer made roughly $129 a year by comparison.

I love Cliff Chiang. The man’s been doing stellar mash-ups of superheroes with 80’s pop culture icons for awhile now. In the 19th Century having a photograph taken was a lengthy process. Frustrated by the difficulties of getting children to sit still long enough to snap a proper photo , photographers in the 1800’s conceived of a technique called “The Hidden Mother”. Draping a sheet over the mothers head in an attempt to camouflage her as a part of the furniture to better emphasize the child, the mother was then able to hold her infant and keep them still long enough for the camera to get an exposure. Vintage photographs already have a eerie feel to them, but these images of moms as cloaked phantoms take the creep factor to the next level.
